Movie Voice Guy Don LaFontaine Dead at 68
Tuesday, September 2, 2008 at 1:31PM
Don LaFontaine was one of a kind, a man who
left an indelible mark on the entire motion picture industry without being a
movie star, a director, a studio executive, an agent, or a screenwriter.
LaFontaine voiced trailers, over 5,000 of them, and was widely known as "The
Movie Voice Guy."
"In a world where..."? That's Don LaFontaine. And
he passed away yesterday after a long illness
at the age of 68.
"We have to very rapidly establish the world we are
transporting them to," he said of his famous intro during a 2007 interview.
"That's very easily done by saying, `In a world where ... violence rules.' `In a
world where ... men are slaves and women are the conquerors.' You very rapidly
set the scene."
The majority of Americans had no idea who LaFontaine was
until he pulled back the curtain, appearing as himself in a Geico commercial,
where he was employed to help dramatize an average citizen's insurance claim.
Here's a video tribute to LaFontaine, featuring some
other voices you may be familiar with, and a little bit of the king in action.
Clearly, movie trailers have turned an unfortunate corner this week.
