Emmy Rossum Talks 'Dragonball' and Becoming Bulma
Saturday, September 20, 2008 at 3:20AM
Like it or not,
Dragonball fans,
Emmy Rossum
is your new Bulma. The star of Phantom of the Opera did things for this
movie she's never done before, including riding a motorcycle and learning how to
hold a gun. That's doubly helpful if they ever make a bio-pic about Dog the
Bounty Hunter. I think she'd be a shoo-in.

But Rossum understands that very existence of the big screen version of the anima/manga series is bad news for some of the die-hards, who fear that Hollywood will destroy Dragonball. Rossum tells MTV that they needn't worry...at least about Bulma. "When I signed on to the project, I was a big fan of the anime and knew [Bulma] as the iconic blue, bobbed character and wanted to stay true to that, but we also wanted to make it realistic...So in keeping with the director and what the studio really wanted, we adapted her look to be a little more realistic and human, and little bit more believable for contemporary day. She’s pretty bad-ass, but still quirky and fun, and kind of ridiculous in the way she is in the anime." I wonder why she'd want to make Bulma more realistic. What's the point of realism in a Dragonball movie? Be that as it may, Emmy feels a great responsibility to do the series justice because, "so many people feel such a closeness to these characters." Other points of interest, according to Rossum, include James Marsters as Lord Piccolo and some other villain, and a monstrous one at that. "It’s actually a very tall man - an 8-foot man," she added. "It’s based on something else from the...You know, I can’t really say anything else." See there? That's what they call "a tease." When Dragonball hits theaters on April 10th, it will no doubt be divisive. Purists want it one way, casual fans will just be happy to watch it. And casual fans usually win out because there are more of them, whether it's baseball or Star Trek. The purists get to cling to their self-righteousness, so there's that trade off. But, yes, I wouldn't expect this to be a dream scenario for the die hard fans, some of whom have already used this forum to shred nearly every major casting decision for the film.
