'Sex and the City' Sequel and Prequel(s) on the Way

Get ready for more shoes and some post-menopausal sex:
Sarah Jessica
Parker confirmed this week that there will be a
Sex and the City sequel.
At a release party for the DVD, in stores this Tuesday, Parker and creator
Michael
Patrick King confirmed the follow-up to
Fox News.
He's writing the screenplay this fall, and Parker and
Kim Cattrall,
who was the major stumbling block for the first film getting off the ground, say
they're both excited to read the new script.
Candace Bushnell, who wrote the original novel,
says she's hard at work on two new books based on the young Carrie Bradshaw.
Uh-huh: We're getting Sex and the City prequels, at least in print.
When pressed on who should play Carries, Bushnell mentioned
Miley Cyrus, although that seemed like she was
just drawing a name out of a hat. The Carrie Years,
which is what they series would be called, would be aimed at teenagers,
specifically "Carrie's friendships, romances and how she realised her dream of
becoming a writer," reports
The Guardian.
"Carrie in high school did not follow the crowd - she
led it," Bushnell said. "It was there that she began observing and commenting on
the social scene.". Oh, you mean like Gossip Girl?
I honestly don't see what good a sequel does, unless
there's trouble on the Carrie/Big front. And in that case, why the hell did we
have to sit through the first movie? A prequel makes a bit more sense -
introducing the characters to each others' worlds, attracting a younger audience
- but even then, I'm skeptical. When thing feel like they come to a natural
conclusion, like the TV series, it's best to listen to that.
Sure, the movie made $25 million on one day and was a
huge hit internationally, but if you're weighing art vs. commerce, art is
clearly the loser in this situation. You can make the case that because the
movie and the series end with the same emotional conclusion, that we didn't
really advance the characters much the last time we saw them, so money has
already won out. Don't get me wrong: The show was too important, both to women
and to television comedies, to not get a huge payday. They deserved a big,
successful movie. And they got it. Time for Carrie and the girls to grow old
gracefully.
That's my opinion. Parker has her own. "Let’s wring everything we can out of
this thing," she said at the DVD release party. And that appears to be exactly
what they're doing.

So this has changed from the news that SJP said "no" to a sequel on September 19?
