'Zack and Miri' Hits the Airwaves
Saturday, September 20, 2008 at 2:20AM
Believe it or not, the big question for the new
Kevin Smith
comedy
Zack and Miri Make a Porno is how will it be
marketed? Regardless of whether or not it's funny and whether it signals a
return to form for Smith, the bottom line is, well, the bottom line. How can The
Weinstein Company run ads for a movie with "porno" in the title in prime time
and how can that broaden the director's appeal?
You and I might think that's silly, but they've had to
have meetings about to how push a movie that was at one point rated NC-17 in the
marketplace. Smith has never been a mainstream draw - his biggest "hit" grossed
only $31 million - so if they want to build on those numbers, things like
trailers and commercials can certainly help.
Here's the first TV ad, and it sets up the action a bit
too much, because there are maybe only two funny lines in the entire minute.
Probably needs a bigger total to draw a lot of new blood.
Take a look and decide for yourself:
Her name Bubbles.
So do you think that will do the trick? Is the draw of
Seth Rogen
and the outside chance you'll see some skin enough to make up for what the
commercial lacks? Or do you think the commercial's fine the way it is? I think
it needs a couple more big laughs, and watching the trailer, I'm sure they could
find a few more things to use. I guess the fear is that it won't make a lot of
converts, but it's still early; maybe the next batch of ads will be a little
more interesting.
Zack and Miri hits theaters on Halloween.

Surprise, Surprise! Jason Mewes is in it. I hope people aren't planning on watching it for the chance at seeing some skin. Kevin Smith's movies have never really shown much nudity. The flash of Joey Lauren Adams in the changing room from Mallrats, and the full frontal (with the tuck) Jason Mewes in Clerks 2 are probably the most memorable. I expect this movie to be hilarious, and I don't think I've seen a bad movie with Seth Rogen in it. Hopefully Seth will draw the non Kevin Smith fans.
I canname a bad Seth Rogen movie: Knocked Up. Maybe it was far overrated by the time I got to it, but I found it to be more depressing than funny. It was like watching Judd Apatow's version of The Story of Us. Other than that, he's done well. Smith also disappointed with Clerks 2. I'll be happy to see them both in rare form.
