Monday, September 22, 2008 at 10:03PM Judd Apatow's Completely Made-Up Pedophile Comedy
This has either been the best-kept secret in Hollywood
or it's a remarkable ruse (and for three or four minutes, I was a remarkable
rube).
Through
Cinemablend, I was dragged over to a story at
Weekly Dig,
an alternative paper out of Boston. I was already questioning the story's
validity when I noticed the words "Cuckolding Blonde Brat Who Loves Big
Black..." in an ad on Dig's front page, but I decided to run with it
anyway, because it's just so outlandish. But if it's true, I'll eat my sandals.
Here are the major details:
Judd Apatow
has been filming a movie with
Jonah Hill in and around Beantown called
Pedovan, in which Hill plays a character who loves kids...only he's often
mistaken for a guy who loves kids. Why hasn't anyone heard of Pedovan?
Dig explains that after the
Tropic Thunder fallout, people are more
sensitive to those kinds of issues and keeping a low profile was good both for
the production and the rumor mill.
I don't even believe that much, because the Tropic
Thunder dust-up is maybe two months old. There was never an announcement
made about this movie even being produced, and Camp Apatow always announces
those things.
The idea is actually pretty funny, which is the only
thing about this story that holds water. Hill's character really just wants to
give the children of his community happiness, but his efforts are
misinterpreted, especially when he starts driving kids around in a van. But it's
only funny up to a point, and that point would either be boredom or implied
creepiness.
The paper cites sources, like a Tim Lochland from the
Office of Film Industry Tax Relief, neither of which show up in a Google search
outside of this story. So that's shady at the very least. And the more you read,
the less plausible it becomes. There's even an "official
website," which looks entirely unofficial.
So why bother? Got me. This article is nearly 1,500
words long, and unless The Weekly Dig does this sort of thing every week
(and if that's the case, they should be better at it by now), there's no
relevance to it. And the only thing funny in the article is the plot outline,
which, as we said, is the only part of it that is even logical. Every other
detail screams nonsense.
Is it a satire of all things Apatow? I guess. But isn't
this a long way to go to get to the punchline, particularly when the setup is
funnier than whatever the punchline is? I mean, a separate website? The article
says to look for Pedovan in late 2009, but I think we'll just see Apatow denying the sort of story The Onion does so much better.

I really like the Photoshopped movie poster and the Red Band trailer you can't click on.
Yes, and let's not forget the International Pictures logo.
A 'Christmas 2009' release date and they already have the R rating secured, huh...?
