Box Office - The 'Eagle' Has Landed
Sunday, September 28, 2008 at 11:35AM
On Thursday,
we estimated that
Eagle Eye was headed to an easy win at the box
office, placing its three-day total just shy of $30 million. $29 million later,
Eagle Eye did cruise to victory, earning more money than the second-,
third-, and fourth-place finishers combined, according to
Box Office
Mojo.
If the
Shia LaBeouf thriller performs to the usual
expectations of a number one movie, where the opening weekend is about 30% of
its total domestic box office, than it will be close to $100 million, and it
will have earned back its production budget, meaning a healthy international run
could make it profitable before you need to factor in home video.
The runner-up was the weepy Nicholas Sparks drama,
Nights in Rodanthe, starring
Richard Gere
and Diane Lane.
We were off by about a million bucks with this one; it made just under $14
million, and we thought it would come in just over that amount.
The weekend's big shocker was the performance of
Fireproof,
the religious-themed firefighter drama starring
Kirk Cameron.
We talked about the economics of Eagle Eye earlier; this film cost half a
million and made 12 times that amount in three days, good enough for a
fourth-place finish. It's an extremely impressive opening, and in my opinion,
it's the real winner this weekend.
The Top Five:
1 - Eagle Eye ($29.2 million)
2 - Nights in Rodanthe ($13.6 million)
3 - Lakeview Terrace ($7 million)
4 - Fireproof ($6.5 million)
5 - Burn After Reading ($6.2 million)

I totally agree with your point of "Fireproof". Where the hell did this movie come from? And for the most part, these super low-budget religious movies have bombed lately ("Expelled", "Facing the Giants", etc). But hey, good for the filmmakers for making something people actually want to see. Though I have a feeling it'll drop like a rock after this weekend.
Sherwood Pictures, of Sherwood Baptist Church in Albany, GA, made both "Fireproof" and "Facing
the Giants." "Giants" was no bust--it made over $10 million in its theater run with a $100,000 budget. Extrapolating that to "Fireproof," you could be looking at a $500,000 budget movie grossing $30 million--conservatively speaking.
Incidentally, it's a good picture that will cause you to both laugh and cry.
