James Cameron Never "Blessed" 'Terminator Salvation'

Remember all the chatter about how bad-ass Terminator Salvation looked when the teaser trailer came out and how people at Comic Con couldn't keep from drooling on themselves? Director McG sounded incredibly sure of himself and suddenly this fourth chapter (and a beginning of a new trilogy) seemed less like a cheesy tack-on and more like a worthwhile extension of premise.

Yes, it was all very exciting. You have Christian Bale in the cast, somehow or other Arnold will be included, and the consensus was building that this is the movie Terminator fans needed to see.

Unless your name is James Cameron. The Terminator creator and Titanic director says that, contrary to previous reports, he's not involved enough with the project to give it a thumb's up.

Talking to The National Post, Cameron disputed McG's Comic Con claim that he had given the film his blessing.

“It could be a big steaming pile or it could be brilliant. Sam Worthington is in the Avatar and the new Terminator and he likes the script, but I never saw it. There was no blessing involved.”

Of course, I don't know if Cameron's blessing at this point means all that much. Remember, the conclusion of this story is pretty well-known. You can't really escape it. So this fourth movie is a means to an end, and you've definitely got the best actor playing John Connor in the new trilogy. I'm not sold on McG - and neither are you - but I had misgivings about T3 and thought that was, on the whole, serviceable.

It will be an interesting batch of headlines next year, when both T4 and Cameron's Avatar race into theaters. I have a hunch only one of them will be a huge hit. And it hasn't received Cameron's blessing.
