Whatever you think about the remake of
Friday the 13th, it's definitely going to
generate a fair amount of opening weekend box office. Like Rob Zombie's
Halloween before it, there's in undeniable curiosity for these things, and
when you take aim at the big three (both of these movies and Nightmare on Elm
Street), it's not as tough a sell as, say, The Amityville Horror or
The Hills Have Eyes. A lot of the work is done for you just by embarking
on the remake in the first place.
Still, you can't go shot-for-shot and tell the exact
same story again. Zombie added to Halloween by including more of Michael
Myers' backstory, and I thought that was fine. Rob Zombie's problem is that he
writes the worst dialogue on the planet, but the idea was probably something a
remake needed to be a little different.
I'm not 100% sold on the way they're handling Friday
the 13th, because in the remake, Jason does all the killing, he's got the
hockey mask, and he's a full-grown unstoppable slaughtering machine. That wasn't
the case in the original, so in a very real way, this is more like one of the
many inferior sequels.
Frankly, I think the producers (including Michael Bay)
have missed a golden opportunity by not using Mrs. Voorhees this time. It's been
a long time since we've had a slasher like her, not so much with Jason.
But whatever: They're trying to sell a product, and the
product is the guy in the mask. Speaking of,
Horror Bid
has some images from the set of Friday the 13th featuring the brand new Jason,
Derek Mears
both with and without his mask.

It's like they planned it this way; Friday the
13th will open on Friday, February 13th. And you can see even more of the new Jason at Horror Bid.

I so don't fucking care about this thing. No Kane Hodder, no way I see it. They screwed up Jason vs. Freddy with Ken Kirzinger. Why don't they just use the guy who played Jason the most, and in the best sequels? (Those being 7 and 10. By the way, it's Jason 10, not Jason X, like Malcolm X. X is the roman numeral for 10, and it's the 10th movie. God, people are stupid.) Anyway, I grew up with this franchise, and I love it's silliness, but don't take a dump on it. I hated the new Texas Chainsaw Massacre, don't even care to see Zombie's Halloween, and remaking this and Nightmare is an unholy sin. Crap on everyone. Now I'm mad.
