Harold Ramis Talks 'Ghostbusters 3' Concept and Script

Despite a lot of excitement today stemming from mostly unsubstantiated claims about the futures of Batman and Captain America, there is another big film franchise with a more legitimate update: Ghostbusters. Last week, it was speculated that maybe Judd Apatow or Seth Rogen or both were working on a script to the threequel, when Dan Aykroyd made a comment in an interview. The script is being written (or re-written) by Gene Stupnisky and Lee Eisenberg, whose work on The Office is pretty damn good. Harold Ramis, one of the original Ghostbusters and the de facto director of this new installment, e-mailed The Chicago Tribune to clear some things up.

"columbia is developing a script for GB3 with my year one writing partners, gene stupnitsky and lee eisenberg.  judd apatow is co-producing year one and has made several other films for sony, so of course the studio is hoping to tap into some of the same acting talent. aykroyd, ivan reitman and i are consulting at this point, and according to dan, bill murray is willing to be involved on some level.  he did record his dialogue for the new ghostbusters video game, as did danny and i, and ernie hudson.  the concept is that the old ghostbusters would appear in the film in some mentor capacity.  not much else to say at this point.  everyone is confident a decent script can be written and i guess we'll take it from there."

Seriously, would it kill him to use capital letters? OK, so I think we can kind of see how this would play out. The new Ghostbusters have no luck in their new jobs, and the old guys come in about an hour into the movie and give them pointers, and then show up at the very end after the big poltergeist battle. The question is, who would the Ghostbusters be? I think Paul Rudd is a definite pick, and I'd like him to lead the pack, actually. There's all this talk about the other Apatow talent - Rogen, Jonah Hill, Michael Cera - and I suppose any of them make sense. I just wish it didn't seem so predictable on that level. Who would the surprise be? I'd like to see somebody knock us over with some comedic chops we wouldn't see coming. If I had to hazard a guess: Rudd, Rogen, Danny McBride, and Craig Robinson. So now that it's out there, what do you think? Lousy idea? Or are they going about this necessary evil the right way?
