Fifteen Movies Worth the Wait in 2009

Tomorrow morning, I'll recap 2008 in movies and look ahead to 2009 on our local Fox affiliate here in Phoenix. It's at 9:45am Mountain Time if you're interested. But I was asked to pick the five best and worst movies of the year, which we've already talked about (the best)/(the worst). But the five movies I'm looking forward to the most in 2009? Well, I hadn't given that too much thought.

And then I started looking over the list of 2009 releases, and while there might be another eight or ten movies I came across that would be second teamers, plus the Sundance and Toronto hits yet to come that will shake up everything, I really only found maybe 20 movies I was anticipating. Is that normal? Yeah, probably. I'd think it would be a tremendous year if you could find 30 movies you were completely amped about.

There are few obvious ones - Watchmen, Transformers, Trek, Terminator, Wolverine, and Harry Potter - but what about stuff not released between May 1st and July 17th?

If you want a decent overview, plus a few new pictures of some of the films of 2009, Entertainment Weekly has a preview, although it also includes stuff like The Ugly Truth and Obsessed, which I can't say I'm looking forward to.

But I went through all 12 months and narrowed down my list to what I think are 15 movies we're absolutely going to be talking about in 2009. At least half of them will be in the top ten in box office receipts, one or two might have some Oscar potential, and who knows, there might be an absolute bomb on here as well. So in chronological order, here are the 15 movies coming up in 2009 that I'm excited about, curious about, or simply can't deny:

Watchmen (3.6)
Monsters vs. Aliens (3.29)
Wolverine (5.1)
Star Trek (5.8)
Terminator Salvation (5.22)
Transformers (6.26)
Public Enemies (7.1)
Harry Potter (7.17)
Inglourious Basterds (8.21)
The Informant (9.18)
Where the Wild Things Are (10.16)
Wolf Man (11.6)
Sherlock Holmes (11.20)
The Lovely Bones (12.11)
Avatar (12.18)

What does your list look like, and what do you think I left out?

Of what's on your fanboy-heavy list I'm only really anticipating Where the Wild Things Are. I'd also add Bruno and Shutter Island as 2 I'm really looking forward to.

I had Shutter Island on the list when it ballooned to about 20.

Alejandro-Gonzalez Inarritu's has a new film with Javier Bardem coming out in December and it is going to be great he is one of the best filmmakers working. Q.T.'s film is going to be interesting, but I'm not sold on it. Cormac McCarthy's pulitzer prize winning novel The Road, love that book, with Viggo Mortensen could be great. Coppola has a film coming out, but the main two that were left off this list are THE HUMAN FACTOR & SHUTTER ISLAND. Eastwood directing a film about Nelson Mandela with Morgan Freeman playing Mandella and Matt Damon is in it as well. THE HUMAN FACTOR will be a classic. SHUTTER ISLAND directed by Scorsese with Leo, Michelle Williams, Emily Mortemer, Ben Kingsley, Max Von Sydow, Mark Ruffalo, and a few more great actors which I forgot, that film will be great as well.

A few things: We don't know exactly when The Road is on the way, though that was my stupid oversight for just going through the release calendar. Yes, that's definitely one to look out for. Thanks.

Shutter Island just missed the cut, and maybe I'm overstating a couple of mine that I've already seen stills or trailers for and letting that get in the way of Scorsese.

I wouldn't trust Francis Coppola to make a worthwhile film now as far as I could throw him. What's it been, 30 years since his last great movie? The Eastwood thing is supposed to come out next December, but I'm not as eager about that, for some reason.

Finally, the only caution I'll give on the Inarritu film is that his working relationship with writer Guillermo Arriaga ended bitterly, and Inarritu has never written any of his films, and he's giving it a go here, with about three other writers. Could be great, but it's kind of a McCartney without Lennon scenario, or the other way around.

But thanks, Zack, for all the feedback. I appreciate it.

There are a lot of movies to get excited about every year, much like everyone's team is going to the Super Bowl(TM) in June. Okay, maybe not the Lions.

Anyway, I am most eager to see what happens with Avatar. Will it have the same sudden impact and lingering importance to pop culture history as T2 and Titanic? That is the question I am most looking forward to having answered this year, even more so than "Who watches the Watchmen?"

Yeah, I love the all three of the Inarritu+Arri aga films. Amores Peros is one of my favorite films of all time, but I think he is moving on from the trio of non-linear stories and is going to become a great all around filmmaker. I don't think he has to do the non-linear work. And, if Bardem passed off Pablo Escobar for this role, I have to figure it's a preety juicy role.

Also, Ang lee's Woodstock could be very good. Love Ang Lee

I agree with you about Coppala. He made four great films and then lost his indentity to make the greatest, or at least one of the greatest, war films ever made.

Oh burned, I'm sure you noticed, they said you where getthebigpicture.com not .net =\
They also had it typed that way when the camera was on you "Colin Boyd, Movie Critic, Getthebigpicture.com"
sadness.

Hey colin, what's the scoop on Pacino playing Salvador Dali, any good buz on that?

I don't believe they've started filming that yet. It had a 2009 release date once upon a time, and maybe that will still hold up, but I can't say for sure.

I'll definitely be checking out Public Enemies and Watchmen.
