QT's 'Inglourious Basterds' to Arrive in August
Wednesday, December 31, 2008 at 8:00PM
We received word today from The Weinstein Company that Inglourious Basterds, the new Quentin Tarantino World War II movie, will now open August 21, 2009. That's a two-month shift for Basterds, which had at one time been rumored for a June release following a potential run at the Cannes Film Festival.

The film is a co-production of Weinstein and Universal, who are obviously looking at the landscape in the summer of 2009, seeing how crowded it is between the beginning of May and the end of July, and reacting appropriately. Basterds stars Brad Pitt and a bunch of actors you might not think would fit together in a movie about a batalion of Jewish-American soldiers fighting Nazis and taking their scalps.
There's not much competition on August 21st; the new Final Destination movie opens that day as does a comedy called The Goods. It's safe to say neither one of those movies has the same cachet as a Tarantino movie starring Brad Pitt.
As for Cannes, we'll see; an August release doesn't mean it won't be ready in May, but QT's usually a slow worker, so a movie that's working with a 160-page script might not be rarin' to go seven months after production starts. But as far as box office potential goes, Inglourious Basterds has just been helped immeasurably.
