Box Office: Eastwood Beats Up the Brides
Saturday, January 10, 2009 at 3:23PM
It is not Bride Wars that's ruling the box office through one day this weekend, but rather Clint Eastwood's Gran Torino, which has given the 78-year-old legend his best opening day ever in wide release. Torino earned $9.6 million on Friday, according to Box Office Mojo, putting the film on target for a $26 - $30 million weekend.

But Bride Wars, the horribly reviewed new Kate Hudson-Anne Hathaway comedy, may not even open in second place. It trails The Unborn slightly, even though it's playing in nearly 1,000 more theaters. Both films opened with just over $8 million, and while it's more likely that Bride Wars will overcome this stumble and wind up in second place, The Unborn would have to be considered the bigger success if the numbers stay close. It's a smaller movie with smaller expectations, so if it plays even, that's actually a win.
Marley & Me and Benjamin Button round out the top five.
We'll take a look at the final numbers tomorrow, which should smile on Eastwood and other Oscar movies still tearing it up in limited release.
