A Little Bit of Sam Rockwell's 'Winning Season'
Monday, January 12, 2009 at 3:47AM
Damn, I like Sam Rockwell. He had so many memorable roles seemingly right in a row with The Green Mile, Galaxy Quest, and even Charlie's Angels, before his brilliant turn as Chuck Barris in Confessions of a Dangerous Mind. And then it got kind of iffy. The choice of roles wasn't as strong and the good stuff was really sporadic.

Then he kind of rebounded with a supporting turn in The Assassination of Jesse James and was great this past year in Snow Angels and Choke, although more people will see him in Frost/Nixon than in all three of those films combined.
But I'm glad he's on the right track again; we've learned in the past week he'll be an Iron Man villain (along with Mickey Rourke), and he'll hit Sundance this week with The Winning Season, a kind of Bad News Bears flick about a washed-up basketball coach getting a chance to put his life back together when he takes over his daughter's high school team. The movie co-stars Emma Roberts, and is written and directed by James Strouse, who hit Sundance a couple of years ago with Grace is Gone.
Here's a little clip from The Winning Season, with Rockwell instructing his young players. Or maybe it's the other way around.

There is, of course, no release date for the film yet, but if it does well at Sundance, it should have a distributor by the end of the month.
