'Slumdog,' Winslet Dominate Golden Globes
Sunday, January 11, 2009 at 10:46PM
Though they aren't the same voting pool, The Golden Globes can be a predictor of the Academy Awards, and this year, it's looking more and more like there will be a lot of symmetry where the major awards are concerned.

Slumdog Millionaire took home four Globes - Best Picture, Best Director, Best Screenplay, and Best Score - and won in every category in which it was nominated. The film was already no lower than second place on most people's scorecards for the Oscars, but it is now the unquestioned frontrunner for Best Picture.
There were some surprises; Kate Winslet won two awards, when she might have only been slightly favored (if at all) for only one. Winning Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress gives Winslet a lot of momentum, particularly in the Best Supporting Actress race for the Academy Awards, because The Reader is getting better press overall than Revolutionary Road. But it didn't matter tonight, as Winslet seemed genuinely shocked to win both trophies.
Vicky Cristina Barcelona won Best Picture in the musical/comedy division. That was really a close race, and as we said when making our predictions on Friday, you could make arguments for any of the five nominees. Speaking of our predictions, we got our ass handed to us, picking only five of the nine categories correctly. Ouch. Here are the winners:
Best Picture - Drama
Slumdog Millionaire Best Picture - Musical or Comedy
Vicky Cristina Barcelona Best Actor - Drama
Mickey Rourke - The Wrestler Best Actress - Drama
Kate Winslet - Revolutionary Road Best Actor - Musical or Comedy
Colin Farrell - In Bruges Best Actress - Musical or Comedy
Sally Hawkins - Happy-Go-Lucky Best Director
Danny Boyle - Slumdog Millionaire Best Screenplay
Simon Beaufoy - Slumdog Millionaire Best Score
A.R. Rahman - Slumdog Millionaire Best Animated Film
Wall-E Best Foreign Language Film
Waltz With BashirThe next big day for the 2008 movies comes on January 22nd, when the Oscar nominations are announced. We'll try to do better predicting those nominees...

My thoughts on the Golden Globes:
When Borat read off Vicky Cristina Barcelona for Best Picture - Musical or Comedy I thought he was pulling a prank. Who else would have the balls to read off the wrong name at an awards ceremony?
They handled the Heath Ledger win well. Not sure I knew Christopher Nolan was English.
Seth Rogan and Elizabeth Banks came off as the big pricks of the night.
Bruce Springsteen and Mickey Rourke were the coolest.
Congrats to Slumdog Millionaire, let's hope it's not the Sense and Sensibility of 2008.
Colin, I was shocked by how far off your predictions were to the actual winners. That is not like you. Maybe that means this year is the year of the underdog. Should we get ready for the same kind of surprises at the Oscars?
Did Mickey trip as we was going up the stairs to accept his award or did his shoe fall off? He is an interesting fellow...
The Globes are usually more of a crapshoot than the Oscars because you have the extra categories. And Best Actor this year has been a back-and-forth affair the whole time. The Winslet stuff bowled me over; I didn't expect her to win once, much less twice.
How the hell did that True Blood actress win? Damn.
Just a minor correction. For best soundtrack the artists name is AR Rahman, not AH.
i didn't think Mickey Rourke would ever show up in public again, then there he was, winning big at the Golden Globes
