McG Aims High for His Captain Nemo
Wednesday, January 14, 2009 at 10:19AM
I'm not opposed to a remake of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. Like The Day the Earth Stood Still, the original is old enough and its reputation is safe enough that even the worst update won't hurt its standing. In fact, if the remake is bad enough, it probably helps the original.

It's been over 50 years since Disney first plumbed the depths with Captain Nemo, and it will again, with McG at the helm. We'll find out this summer whether or not McG has the goods when Terminator Salvation arrives in theaters, and Disney, seizing an opportunity to pay him less now than they'd have to after the Terminator sequel makes a few hundred million, signed the director last week.
And he's pulling out all the stops for 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea: Captain Nemo, telling Latino Review that he has a very specific actor in mind to play Nemo, whom McG describes as being "more about obsession...he is obsessed and people tend to forget that when you become so obsessed you end up being the villain.”
So who does he want on board the Nautilus? “Man, I’m trying to get Will Smith to do it, been trying to get a hold of him. I've been wanting to work with him for a long time already. That guy's great.”
Well, sure. Why wouldn't you want to get the world's top movie star? And why would Disney not put all its eggs in that basket? I'd be really surprised if we don't hear more about that casting in the next couple of months.

When I read the teaser for your post, I thought it was going to be Pacino or DeNiro or something like that. Will Smith as Nemo? I'm not so sure. Maybe in the Kirk Douglas role. He's played that before. I don't see the words obsession and Will Smith going together. Maybe its just me...
I dunno. He was obsessed in Seven Pounds and I Am Legend.
Um, you might take away my movie watcher card for this, but: I haven't seen either of those yet!
I will watch those and reconsider.
See I Am Legend first. It's probably more like that performance, I'd guess.
