Spike Says Everybody's Back for 'Inside Man 2'

Attending Sundance this week, Spike Lee flagged down MTV (or vice Versa) to talk about the bank heist sequel, Inside Man 2, and the director noted that major changes are on the way.

So it won't be about Clive Owen and his team of thieves ripping off New York's diamond district? “Naw, naw, not anymore,” Lee said, clutching tightly to specifics. “Can’t tell you, or I’ll have to do one of these,” he added, feigning a stabbing gesture.

The good news is that all four principals from the original, one of the better hits of 2006, are on board for another round. That means Owen, Denzel, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and Jodie Foster, who was fantastic and worked extra hard to earn the c-word hurled her direction in the first movie.

Last summer, when Lee first broached the subject of a sequel, it was contingent on a script to be written by Russell Gerwitz, another move in keeping continuity from Inside Man. Gerwitz was replaced a while back by Terry George, who wrote and directed Hotel Rwanda. “He just finished—he’s at the end of the first act,” revealed Lee, who said that if the script comes together in time, filming cool begin late this summer or early this fall.

I don't mind a sequel to this movie at all. For starters, it's not like anything was resolved in the first one. A second chapter could have naturally happened based on the events from Inside Man. Secondly, if that kind of talent is willing to return, you have to roll the dice. The first movie did just a little shy of $200 million around the world, but a sequel, if done correctly, could easily exceed that. It's not a story I want to continue for four or five movies, but while there's still a natural progession to follow, why not?

This only proves to me that there is no justice in the world.
