Actors Roundtable with Rourke, Brolin, Jackman, and More
Sunday, January 18, 2009 at 11:01AM
There's more great awards season video from The Hollywood Reporter, which has previously given us wonderful conversations with some of the year's most heralded actresses and directors, and now we get to hear from a talented crop of actors: Mickey Rourke, Ed Harris, Josh Brolin, Hugh Jackman, Richard Jenkins, and Benicio Del Toro.

How would you like to watch a film with those guys in the cast? That's a pretty good start, right? I'll say that of the group of videos in this year-end collection, these are probably the most informative and the most entertaining. There's plenty of Mickey Rourke, who is probably the leading Best Actor candidate this year for The Wrestler. Says Rourke of the last 15 years of his career:
Actors on Choices
Alternate Careers
Rourke on Roles
Actors on Surprises

"My issues weren't about acting; I had issues from the past that dealt with other issues that brought up other issues. So I came across as unpredictable, unreliable, unconventional, irresponsible, unprofessional...I could keep going."I hope that The Reporter releases more videos from each set - because there's no way they got all these guys together for just 15 minutes - and I'd be particularly interested to see more from the conversation with these actors.

Great stuff :)
Nice to hear them talk so openly and relaxed.
Post more if you get it.
I really hope Mickey gets the Oscar. If you haven't seen "The Wrestler" I implore you to do so. I saw it the other night and thought it was mesmerizing. Rourke's completely honest performance along with Aronofsky's "Cinéma vérité" approach makes it seem as though you are watching a documentary about an actual person rather than an film with an actor playing a character. Marisa Tomei and Evan Rachel Wood are of course excellent in their supporting roles, however the movie is by and large Mickey. Or should I say, "The Ram." In the The Hollywood Reporter's "Actors Roundtable" conversations Mickey commented on how he had to really fight to get to use the hearing aid in the development of the character. He said in the end Aronofsky allowed him to use it. I felt that the battered looking, old school hearing aid was crucial to understanding the charter. You really feel bad for this guy when you see what a relic of a prosthetic with which the poor fellow is making do. The duck taped winter coat was another nice touch. This is an individual who is behind on the rent at the trailer park because he has to spend lots of dough on cheap steroids in order to keep his battered and beaten body going so he can wrestle to pay the rent. What he doesn't spend on trailer rent, chemical enhancements, gym memberships, tanning bed visits or low cost bleach jobs, he generously spreads around the rest of his meager earnings from the ring at the local strip joint. All of it in a sadly desperate attempt to hold on to the only thing he was ever good at, wrestling, as well as the life style that went along with being on top. These kind of little details along with Rourke's incredibly believable performance and Aronofsky's minimalist film making are all part of what creates the perceived "reality" of the piece. I really hope it sweeps the Oscars and Mickey gets a real shot at some other choice roles like Randy "The Ram" Robinson.
Great videos. I really enjoy this type of thing. The Wrestlers on The Wrestler was great too. Could you please post the entire video unedited? This is the web. If this video was 2hrs long I would be sitting on your web site for 2 hrs watching this video. Or upload it to youtube unedited. Makes no sense in this day and age why you would only post the edited clips and not indulge us with the full video. Please keep the goods coming.
I'm posting what The Hollywood Reporter posted in this case, and what Fox Searchlight had in the other. Why would I edit it?
I am a Mickey Rourke fan from way back, and he gave an amazing performance in the Wrestler. I can't wait to see more. Benicio is also a very interesting character. Both Rourke and del Toro have an enigmatic quality that attracts you on a number of levels but also makes you wonder what makes them tick - which makes for a perfect combo. The video clip discussions were a really great format. I would love to see more of the same.
LOVE those guys!!!!.........the testosterone in the room was through the roof!
i met Josh Brolin........sigh.......he's a funny, charming, smart, talented and handsome. I hope he receives better roles and more accolades.
