Sellers Named Top Movie President
Tuesday, January 20, 2009 at 11:12AM
On this historic day, we were pointed to a new list by CNN of the top ten movie presidents of all time. One real, most are fake, and I have no doubt that within ten years, Barack Obama will be in the running for a list like this.

The top leader of the free world, according to CNN, is Merkin Muffley, one of the three characters portrayed by the great Peter Sellers in Dr. Strangelove. What a master comedian Peter Sellers is. If you were to watch that film today, without the knowledge that Sellers played multiple characters, you probably wouldn't even be aware that he was President Muffley.
Incidentally, we probably wouldn't elect a president named Merkin, if only because that's what you call a pubic hair wig. That's no doubt an inside joke. And as you might expect, there's a long, sordid history of merkins.
Here's the top ten:
1 - Merkin Muffley (Peter Sellers, Dr. Strangelove)
2 - James Marshall (Harrison Ford, Air Force One)
3 - William H. Mitchell (Kevin Kline, Dave)
4 - Jack Stanton (John Travolta, Primary Colors)
5 - Andrew Shepherd (Michael Douglas, An American President)
6 - Thomas J. Whitmore (Bill Pullman, Independence Day)
7 - Tom Beck (Morgan Freeman, Deep Impact)
8 - James Dale (Jack Nicholson, Mars Attacks)
9 - President (Donald Pleasance, Escape from New York)
10- George W. Bush (Josh Brolin, W.)
