81st Annual Academy Award Nominees
Thursday, January 22, 2009 at 7:02AM
There were some definite surprises in this morning's announcement of the Academy Award
nominees; accurately predicting all five contenders in each of the major categories was difficult, because
there were curveballs thrown all over the place.

The Reader earned a Best Picture nomination, and Kate
Winslet's performance vaulted her into the Best Actress race, meaning she only got one nomination. The Dark Knight was
nearly blanked, despite its strong end-of-the-year showing in other lists and awards, netting only a
nomination for Heath Ledger among the major categories. Richard Jenkins and Melissa Leo brought indie cred
to the lead acting categories, and Clint Eastwood was left out in the cold.

2 for Slumdog? I'm guessing the big Bollywood song is one of them but I can't remember any other songs in the film. I remember the M.I.A. song but I don't think that got nominated. I think Springsteen got the biggest snub for his song from The Wrestler. It's a beautiful, pitch-perfect closing after that cut to black at the end of the movie. The Boss wuz robbed.
I'm not terribly disappointed by these nominations. I'm glad to see Danny Boyle and David Fincher join the elite group of Academy favorites, because it will allow these two talents to keep working. Their misses are still more interesting than many other director's hits.
Ron Howard and Clint Eastwood are almost guaranteed nominations in years they put out quality work, so in a year that Mr. Eastwood gave us not one but two quality films, I'm surprised he didn't get more attention.
And as for Wall E...I wonder if we'll ever see an animated film get nominated for best picture since the creation of the Best Animated Feature category. I would like to see Wall-E and Waltz With Bashir duke it out in a no hold barred cage match moderated by Micky Rourke. But, under the current set up, this seems impossible.
Dude, the BBC and the CBC are saying that Winslet got nominated for Best Actress for the Reader, not Revolutionary Road - I guess the Academy didn't buy that "supporting" pitch?
Colin are you going to play the fun game of competing for most correct picks...that is always fun!
Wasn't Kate Winslet nominated for The Reader?
Kate Winslet was nominated for The Reader. Michael Shannon was nominated for Revolutionary Road, obviously, since he wasn't in The Reader. I think Eastwood and DiCaprio are the two most surprising snubs to me. I might be way out of line here, but did anyone actually think Rourke's acting in The Wrestler was that good? I don't think the character was much of a stretch for him. Where as DiCaprio, unless he constantly fights with his super model girlfriends, that was acting. What does everyone else think?
Nah, Kate was predicted to be nominated for best supporting actress for "The Reader", but that didn't happen. I would like to see her win, to tell you the truth though.
What a disappointment this year was, honestly. No nod for Aronofsky, Eastwood or Nolan?? "The Boss" getting snubbed? And where's Dev Patel?
Three things I am thankful for, however: Taraji P. Henson finally gets a nod after years of great work. My second favorite movie of last year, "In Bruges" gets a Best Screenplay nomination. And the biggest and best surprise was hearing that Richard Jenkins got a nod for his work in "The Visitor". The total underdog in that category, but nonetheless a great moment.
Sorry, how could I forget the Boss. I don't get how he didn't get nominated for his song in The Wrestler. And I might be the only person, but I did not like The Wrestler. I can tell they were handcuffed by a budget, but the story just didn't grip me. And Rourke to me is not very good. I completely understand I might be alone in this thought.
In Bruges, Jenkins and Hensen...all great to see them get credit where credit is clearly due.
Yes, I goofed on the Winslet thing. She'd been split between those two categories for months, so when I saw Best Actress, my mind instantly went to Revolutionary Road. I'm glad it's for The Reader, which was never a supporting performance, however, that's how it was being pushed.
I'm really happy The Reader did so well. I thought it was amazing, and I didn't really think the Academy was gonna recognize that. I'm pulling for Kate Winslet, her performance had me in tears. :)
Best Picture, though...definitely Slumdog Millionaire. But I wouldn't be tooooo put out if Benjamin Button were to win.
