Thursday, January 22, 2009 at 2:18AM John August to Adapt 'Preacher' for Sam Mendes
As disconcerting as it might be for both John August and movie fans around the world that we probably will never see the film version of his screenplay for Shazam! or whatever the Captain Marvel movie was eventually going to be called, we won't have to wait too long to see his handiwork with another comic book character.

How cool is this: August will write the script for Preacher, being developed as a possible directorial effort for Sam Mendes. What the hell's Preacher? It's kind of a road trip story about a man of God who becomes possessed by a half-evil/half-pure/all-powerful creature called Genesis and then sets out to track down the Lord.
Variety announced the deal today, and it could be a stroke of real genius. Even though August's tastes traditionally don't run as dark as the material in the comic book series he's now adapting, he does have experience working with Tim Burton, and he knows how to make a script unique.
I'd rather have a guy who knows movie scripts writing a comic book movie than a comic book guy writing it. They're just different worlds. It's like, let's say an meteor is headed for Earth. Would you want to train oil drillers to be astronauts in a week or would you want to train oil drillers to be astronauts...Well, hold on a second. I think they got that backwards in the Liv Tyler/Aerosmith movie. Wouldn't you want to re-train the astronauts?
Anyway, August makes a great addition to a project that has boundless potential in my estimation. Mendes is a great force behind the camera, and the story is unlike anything else we're bound to see between now and whenever the movie comes out.And if that weren't enough, August is now also reportedly linked to Burton's remake of his own Frankenweenie, a landmark short film from the 80s.
