ABC Adds Another Letter, Remakes 'V'

Here's one thing I don't understand about science fiction: Isn't it pretty much only bound by your imagination, and isn't our imagination advancing even further because science fiction becomes science?

Why is ABC going backwards? The network has ordered a pilot for V , remaking the NBC miniseries/series about an alien invasion. The Alphabet Network seems to have a love affair with the 80s right now, ordering a pilot based on The Witches of Eastwick , as well.

Part of me thinks V should be remade...but not for TV. Another part me of just thinks science fiction is way too open to do this one again instead of one of the great many unfilmed sci-fi scripts I would imagine is floating around Hollywood at the moment.

Again, this is just a pilot, so it doesn't mean we're getting a new show based on V, but is this exciting news to you at all or does it kind of make you roll your eyes? I guess if they go all Galactica on us, it could be good, but in that case, it probably wouldn't be developed by ABC.

V? That's a laugh. It was equally laughable when ABC came out with its short-lived Invasion series too. I watched Invasion for a few episodes here and there (times when Lost had gone into hiding) and never really got into it. For some reason I couldn't shake thoughts of that movie from so long ago, the pods... the body snatching! ::shudder::

To its credit, the ABC show had Kari Matchett who isn't all that hard to stare at and played the might-be-an-alien role well. Yet she wasn't enough to keep that show afloat and I doubt there'll be much to keep V from sinking as well. It seems more like an idea for Sci-Fi channel than ABC which has been itchy with its cancellation finger. Besides that, given the current economic climate that has NBC ditching a prime-time hour generally slotted to dramas in favor of Jay Leno this Fall... is V even viable financially?

I've read that drama shows cost in the millions per episode and that accounts for NBC's proposed change as a new Leno show would be cheaper. ABC already has a stable full of home improvement, bachelor, bachelorette, supernanny, wifeswap shows that seem destined to stay. When it comes to dramatic anything though they're not nearly so committed lately. You might point to Life on Mars as a possible show with legs but I just don't see it and even ratings favorite Lost has been reigned in for being too sprawling and scattershot. Perhaps they'd have a real dedication to making a revised V work but aren't there better places for dollars to be spent than rehashing another network's old stuff? Oh silly me what am I thinking ABC just bought Scrubs... yes it all makes sense now. Let's just look over the entire NBC catalog and see what else can be copied over.

Oh man...V. I loved it as a kid. I remember coming in early from playing just to watch the mini-series. I loved it. Then tried to watch it again in my mid 20's as a rental. After about 45 minutes I had to turn it off..it's soooo freakin' bad.

Going Galactica is the only way they can pull this off.
