More 'Paul Blart,' More of the Time

You wanted the Blart, you got the Blart!

The Los Angeles Times caught up with Sony executive Doug Belgrad to discuss the surprising success of Paul Blart: Mall Cop, a poorly reviewed comedy with an unlikely leading man in Kevin James. The studio, naturally, wants a repeat performance.
"Happy Madison historically has been very reluctant to do sequels," says Belgrad of the movie's production company. "But we believe there is an opportunity to make another Paul Blart movie."
In large part because of the track record of Blart, the 2009 box office is already 15% over the 2008 clip through three weekends, and in these troubled economic times, if you can launch a sub-$30 million comedy and make $100 million with it, every studio in Hollywood will buy a bottle.
There's no timetable for another Blart movie - James has a full plate, if you'll excuse the metaphor - but don't be surprised if it happens sooner than later.
