'Resident Evil 4' Will Be Darker...Somehow

I talked to Paul W.S. Anderson a little over a month ago, when Death Race was coming out on DVD. I was fascinated by his business philosophies, because while none of his movies have done $200 million in the U.S. or anything, he keeps making the same kind of movies, so clearly, it's working. The impetus for all of it was hearing how many millions - plural - Jamie Kennedy made from Son of the Mask, a flop that lost about $50 million. So if he's in the black, surely the guy known as "the other Paul Anderson" is doing pretty well. He confirmed that, more or less.

"If you look at the last Resident Evil movie, it did $50 million domestic, another $100 million international. And then on top that, you're adding in DVD and Blu-Ray, and that's at least - at least - another $150, $200 million into the pot, especially if you add in pay-per-view and things like that. By the time you add all that up, it's a third of a billion dollars worth of revenue."

Naturally, there's a fourth Resident Evil movie on the way, and JoBlo cites a very reliable source (so reliable, he or she earned all capital letters with the citation) for what we can expect. To begin with, Anderson will write the script, but he won't direct. The style of the script is more in line with the second one, but "with better dialogue. The overall tone is also very dark." They'll film in Toronto and Japan, with Toronto serving as Alaska, and there is apparently so much hand-to- hand combat that a martial arts choreographer has been hired. The one thing that really raised my eyebrow is not that they don't have a director, but that Milla Jovovich hasn't signed on yet. I'd think that would come before the screenplay, especially since W.S. and Milla are kind of a package deal.

If Milla doesn't sign on they'll lose the "winning formula" and number 4 definitely be the last...

I say if Milla doesn't do it... don't even bother making the thing. Its just going to loose money. The character is hers, and hers only. I think the fans are going to have a hard time accepting someone else after 3 movies...

I mean, her character wasn't even in Resi 4, the game, so it's not like they wouldn't have a plot without the character...

Alice is completely original...it can be only speculated that she was inspired by "Ada" or "the woman in the red dress" because the dress Alice wears for almost the entirety of the first film is basically identical to Ada's dress...and if you didnt know Ada was in fact a character in earlier resident evil games. i cant say i remember for sure but im thinking resident evil 2, maybe not. But anyway, the fourth film will not be the same without Milla, i think Milla as an actress made Resident Evil not a complete failure after such a dramatic change of plot from the actual "Resident Evil" video game plot. George Romero originally wrote the screenplay for the first installment of the Resident Evil film series and His version actually followed the events in the mansion with chris and jill, as well as leon and claires experiences within Racoon City. i would have liked to see this preferedly, but i think Milla made the "entirely different" plot for the Resident Evil film installment work, and without her the series will be worse off for sure.

personally i think they should have kept milla out of all the resident evils.. the movies would have been so much better if they kept with the main characters from the games (Jill, Chris, Claire, Leon and Jill/Chris' boss... I dont remember his name) i think if they keep Alice out of the 4th one and make it more like the game.. it will do so much better than the older ones.. and as someone said earlier Alice might have been inspired by Ada which was in Resident Evil 2.. she had nothing to do with the mansion to begin with.. The RE movies would have done so much better without Milla's character.. She's holding the potential of the series back. Don't get me wrong the movies were still good but it just isn't Resident Evil with her character in it.
