Saturday, January 31, 2009 at 12:04PM Box Office - 'Taken' Takes First on Friday
Taken is off to a rousing start this weekend, and might close in on $25 million
by the time the weekend is over. If positive word of mouth leads to a steady stream of foot traffic on
Saturday, keeping the totals about where they were on Friday, it shouldn't be much of a problem. There will,
however, be a huge drop-off on Sunday because of the Super Bowl.

The Liam Neeson action flick, which has already made money thanks to its 2008 run around the world, put up
just shy of $10 million Friday, according to Box Office Mojo, which is probably healthier than most analysts
predicted. That number means it should have a better than average debut weekend.
Nothing else will even challenge for number one: The Uninvited is looking at a $10 million charge in
its debut, after earning just over $4 million Friday, and the other new release, New in Town, will be
lucky to get past $7 million. Of course, none of this weekend's new flicks have tremendous degrees of
difficulty; they aren't that expensive, and as I mentioned earlier, Taken is already profitable.
We'll have the complete rundown on Sunday, including the Paul Blart $100 Million Countdown! How exciting!

Taken was like a cross between Kiss of the Dragon (Jet Li), Bourne Identity (Matt Damon) and Ransom (Mel Gibson)
