'Nightmare' Remake Coming Before 'Friday the 13th' Sequel

A guy asked me today what I thought of the new Friday the 13th remake. Well, where to begin? A) I haven't seen it, so I don't think anything about "it", B) It's not a remake, technically, and C) All I can do is go by the trailers, which are surprisingly effective.

So that's what I told the guy: "The trailers are great."

We'll know soon enough - and peeling back the curtain a bit here, critics don't see a lot of horror movies nowadays, but I'm seeing this one four days before it's released, just like any other movie - but I think Platinum Dunes and New Line have done so well with the marketing that it will be an opening weekend smash. Should it be the early hit I think it will, we'll obviously get a sequel.

Talking to Bloody Disgusting, producer Brad Fuller confirmed what could not be a secret. If there's money, make another one.

“I think that if the movie does well, we're are all interested in going back to Camp Crystal Lake and making another one,” Fuller admits. “We had a great time and we have Derek [Mears] (Jason Voorhees) for another movie."

"We would love to work with him again, but we won’t make any plans set in stone until we see if the fans respond well to the one we just did.”

But here's an interesting development; the same companies have a deal to make a Nightmare on Elm Street reboot (which should really be a prequel, but won't be). Fuller says that no matter what, that film will happen before the Jason sequel.

“We’re hopeful to announce a director in the next two or three weeks. Once that happens, we’re going to try and move ahead and start to get that movie going first. I believe that Nightmare is the next movie we're shooting and we're hoping to shoot that in April/May in Chicago.”

Unlike other horror characters, they're going to have a hard time replacing Robert Englund as as Freddy Krueger. That one casting decision will be the key to the remake's success or failure.
