Who's the New 'Doctor Who'?
Saturday, January 3, 2009 at 10:00PM
His name is Matt Smith, and he's the next Doctor Who.

Smith, a 26-year-old actor with only a handful of credits, will succeed David Tennant, whose work as the iconic science fiction hero helped make the series relevant again to audiences worldwide over the past four years.
The BBC made the announcement this weekend christening Smith, the eleventh and youngest actor to play the legendary role. Doctor Who first aired on the Beeb in 1963, was televised continuously through 1989, and has enjoyed a renaissance since 2005 with Tennant in the starring role.
I'm still a Tom Baker guy, I suppose, which a lot of people are; Baker served as the Doctor longer than any other actor, although at age 26, Smith would only need to portray the character until he's 34 to break Baker's record.
Check out the actor's first official interview as the new Dr. Who:
Because of the current love affair with the character and the series, there has been talk of spin-offs, like a Doctor Who stage musical or even a film. While I'd love to see a movie version, I'd prefer it as a standalone, not connected to the series in any way. The time to do that may have already passed.
As for Smith, he'll take over the role in 2010.
