'Dark Knight' Grabs Key Nominations from WGA, Cinematographers
Wednesday, January 7, 2009 at 4:40PM
Two more rather meaningful lists of nominations have been released, and much like the Producers Guild, these candidates are likely to have their names read on Oscar night.
The Writers Guild of America and the
American Society of Cinematographers have spoken on the best in their respective fields for 2008.

First the Cinematographers: They've nominated
Roger Deakins twice, just like last year. He is a previous winner for The Shawshank Redemption and The Man Who Wasn't There. This time around, it's for The Reader and Revolutionary Road, which were good examples of his work, but not really award-worthy. However, if there's a guy who deserves an Oscar who's never won one, it's Roger Deakins. He's the best at what he does.
Claudio Miranda - The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
Wally Pfister - The Dark Knight
Roger Deakins - The Reader and Revolutionary Road
Anthony Dod Mantle - Slumdog Millionaire If I were a betting man, and I really should be, I'd go Claudio Miranda for the Oscar, though maybe not this award. I have a feeling that Button will really clean up in technical categories at the Academy Awards. If you've seen all five of these, Miranda, Pfister, and Mantle are at the top of your lists. For the Writers' Guild - over 200 days strike free! - neither of Deakins' films wind up in the running. I would've thought The Reader had a chance, but the WGA has gone with some very safe picks: Original Screenplay:
Burn After Reading
Milk
Vicky Cristina Barcelona
The Visitor
The Wrestler Adapted Screenplay:
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
The Dark Knight
Doubt
Frost/Nixon
Slumdog Millionaire Documentary Screenplay:
Boogie Man: The Lee Atwater Story
Chicago 10
Fuel
Gonzo: The Life and Work of Dr. Hunter S. Thompson
Waltz with Bashir Things that surprise me here: No In Bruges, no Let the Right One In, and the inclusion of Burn After Reading and Vicky Cristina. I'm not saying they weren't worthy, because I enjoyed both films quite a bit, but where's Wall-E? Where's Changeling or Happy-Go-Lucky?

Not to disagree with the poster but I'm glad that there is no Changeling or Happy-Go-Lucky (Leigh works mostly in improvisations, how do you award writing when everyone is involved - i guess the story by credit still means something). However, I do agree with Wall-E and In Bruges getting the shaft. In Bruges was one of the best written and acted films of the year.
deakins also shot "Doubt" which is up for adapted screenplay.
