'Watchmen' Talks "Productive," Court Date Delayed

The ice might be thawing in the Watchmen legal entanglement. Lawyers for both Warner Bros. and Fox say they're having productive discussions about the future of the year's most anticipated pre-summer film, so much so that they've asked Judge Gary Allan Feess to delay a hearing today so talks between the rival parties could continue through the weekend.

The move surprised the judge, according to the Associated Press, considering that Warner Bros. wanted to move up the agreed upon January 20th court date, which could determine whether or not the film opens on March 6th as originally planned.

But both sides are apparently making concessions at this point, with Warner Bros. trying to free the film up for release while Fox wants remuneration for the rights it and Justice Feess say the studio still holds.

What could we expect in the settlement? Who knows. Cash, a first-round draft pick, two minor leaguers to be named later, and maybe the rights to the old Batman TV series, oddly enough. A settlement really is the best solution, if for no other reason than millions of moviegoers aren't left pissed off that a completed film ready to hit theaters can't get there because of a 15-year-old contract in the Fox vaults.
