Thursday, October 1, 2009 at 4:20PM Christopher Nolan's 'Inception' Headed for IMAX
Not exactly out of left field, Christopher Nolan's Inception has been officially added to the 2010 release schedule at IMAX. The film will open in standard theaters and on the steroid screen on July 16th.

I suppose Nolan's new sci-fi film might have a place in IMAX, but I'm certainly not 100% sold that it's ideal. With a Transformers movie or even Harry Potter, you can see in your mind's eye that there's enough spectacle involved to use the IMAX technology. And Nolan's film, which stars Leo DiCaprio, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Ken watanabe, Marion Cotillard, Ellen Page, Michael Caine, and others, has a hefty price tag that leads to a quick assumption of tons of effects. So maybe when we see more footage, this will make perfect sense.
As it stands, it strikes me as another lateral move, like the parade of extremely similar 3-D animated movies - We've seen it, we get it, now please raise the bar. A lot of the IMAX releases look bigger and sound louder, but because they aren't specifically made for that environment, part of the heart-pounding effect that comes from watching one of the better IMAX documentaries simply doesn't transfer.
Of course, Inception stands to make plenty of money, and IMAX will help in that respect. Let's just hope the storytelling matches the size of the screen.

A $200 million+ budget and lots of star power not withstanding, this just does not feel like a movie that should have a summer release date. I mean does "a contemporary sci-fi action thriller set within the architecture of the mind" really sound like the kind of movie a studio should be anchoring it's summer release schedule around? This just seemslike a movie that would do better with a Nov/Dec release date where it could go up against the generally weaker competition of the winter movie season.
I disagree, Christopher Nolan is a household name, and he did in a flash to be honest...he has a loyal fan base and those are the people who will definitly flock to see this film
With Leo headlining that aint such a bad deal neither, no matter what my opinion or anyones opinion is, he too has a huge fan base... and the rest of the cast are icing on the cake, all be it very tasty icing, Im more excited to see them (Joe levitt, cillian murphy)
I think it will do extremely well given its summer date, I mean the marketing is great for the film as well, were talking about it now and its not even 2010
Yeah, this film is expected to be HUGE, something that would definitely work better in the summer season when people are rushing out to see movies.
Oh, and the author's IMAX rant make no sense.
Christopher Nolan does raise the bar when it comes to IMAX & moviemaking in general. For example, he won the American Society of Cinematographers Board of Governors Award earlier this year for his "significant contributions to advancing the art of filmmaking." The ASC president Daryn Okada said "Chris Nolan is infused with talent with which he masterfully uses to collaboratively create memorable motion pictures. His quest for superlative images to tell stories has earned the admiration of our members."
