Thursday, October 1, 2009 at 12:14AM Oscar Bait 'Up In the Air' Will Now Land in December
For the second time in a month, Up in the Air has performed the release date shuffle, moving now from early November to December 25th. Usually, it's a bad sign when a film gets delayed, but in a case like this, it really can be seen as strategery.

The film knocked 'em dead at Toronto and Telluride, which Paramount used as the reason to move the film up to November 13th in the first place. But with star George Clooney's The Men Who Stare at Goats due out on November 6th, it probably was a wise choice to move Up in the Air just to avoid confusion about which Clooney movie he was out promoting. Plus, this gives the other Clooney flick a solid month to come and go before the other highly anticipated movie arrives in theaters.
Paramount has high hopes for this one, and this little transition provides a little more time to develop a strong(er) promotional campaign for Up in the Air, which will share the studio's Oscartime attention with The Lovely Bones. Unlike most other films that have some early Oscar heat, though, this appears to be a viable candidate across the board, with Clooney, director Jason Reitman, Vera Farmiga, and the film's screenplay among the placeholders in the big categories.
December 25th is now the wide release date for the film, but it begin in limited release on December 4th, with a bit o' expansion on December 11th. Check your local listings...
