'Cabin in the Woods' Bumped to 2011, Going 3-D

Another drastic shift in the release schedule will shake up the early months of 2010. The Cabin in the Woods, the Joss Whedon-produced horror movie directed by Cloverfield writer Drew Goddard will no longer be released on February 5th, but instead, MGM will move it...all the way to January 14, 2011.

You might wonder why the film would be delayed an entire year, and according to Shock Till You Drop, MGM is making the move to transfer the film to 3-D. The studio has apparently been encouraged by early reactions to the film, so clearly the thing to do is wait a year to release it and turn a movie that wasn't made to be 3-D into a 3-D frightfest.
I don't know why you'd choose first quarter 2011 even if you're going to upgrade it to 3-D; by the studio's own admission, it's a six-month process. So why not take a page out of the Paranormal Activity book and aim for early October next year and let the audience response carry the film? The additional four-month delay is a head-scratcher.
The other component is how much money MGM currently owes its creditors. The company received the go-ahead to move The Hobbit forward, which couldn't have happened without MGM not paying the interest it owes on $3.7 billion worth of debt. And because Cabin in the Woods was slated to open during the time period in question, it's possible that the studio either wasn't allowed or couldn't afford to relese it in February, based on all these other financial hurdles.
There's nothing else currently slated for the Martin Luther King holiday in 2011, but that certainly won't stay the case for another 16 months. So it won't avoid competition because of this move, nor will it avoid scrutiny.
