Sunday, October 18, 2009 at 4:38AM Nathan Fillion Wants 'Greatest American Hero' Movie
Fan favorite Nathan Fillion won't be The Green Lantern, although a lot of Whedon
acolytes swear he's the perfect fit (he's probably not). But while Filion is plenty busy with his ABC
detective show Castle, he says there is a superhero of sorts he'd love to take the time to play.

In support of his new indie flick Trucker, which has a headline-grabbing performance by Michelle
Monaghan, Fillion tells IFC about what's at the top of his wish list.

"If I had a dream project right now, I'd like to grab a hold of a superhero. There are so many superheroes out there, I feel like there's none left. But there is one I think I could handle, and that's a redo of The Greatest American Hero."And you know what? That's a great idea. The 1980s action comedy series lasted a few seasons, but it really was ironic television at a point where such a thing wasn't quite in vogue yet, so it probably never got enough credit. It wasn't a great show, but it was certainly memorable. William Katt played a high school teacher named Hinkley (whose name was briefly changed to Hinkle after the assassination attempt on Reagan) asked by the government (embodied by Robert Culp) to throw on a suit loaded with super powers. It doesn't always work out so well. Fillion goes on to tell IFC that he's met both Katt and Culp working on Castle, but doesn't say whether or not he's discussed the movie adaptation with them. It could really be a fun project, and Filion would be an excellent choice. And now it would be more ironic than ever.

I don't know, Fillion's got much that same funny leading-man likability that Ryan Reynolds has. Both can also turn on the serious tone when needed and still believably inject humor through it. Fillion would make a fine Green Lantern in my book and he'd no doubt pull off a role like Greatest American Hero. However, in this age of Dark Knight seriousness and cutting edge Wolverine grit what is to stop a GAH movie from looking little more than parody?
Who knows, maybe they are shooting for that angle but in a way that's more Galaxy Quest good than Scary Movie stupid. At the same time though, Galaxy Quest didn't come out surrounded by Trek movies on all sides and I think that helped to make it work. Superhero flicks are all over the place now and will be for the next few years. While something like Kick-Ass will work it's more due to a certain off-beat funny that's dead-on relatable to most anyone who has ever been a teen, read a comic book and dreamed of being heroic. It's a whole lotta different than I think Greatest American Hero will ever hope to be and it's why Hero just might not fly.
Fillion is a much better choice than Reynolds. GIve Fillion Capt. America. He can be hard ass just as easily has funny.
To even make the slightest suggestion that Nathan Fillion wouldn't be ideal for the role as Hal Jordan, a tough, funny, fighter jet flying bad ass, is simply ludicrous. It hardly matters what arena he takes, be it live action or voice acting. he always brings a rare charm to whatever project he's involed in.
Yes, I'm a rabbid Whedon fan, I won't dispute that, but i don't think as highly of his other stable of actors a la' sarah michelle gellar. So I'm not completely biased.
Fillion is underated and underappreciated. All he needs is that one movie, that one big break. when that happens he could very well be on par with clooney in his popularity and dont groan about the comparison. after all clooney was in batman and robin (which we should never let that cocky bastard ever forget)
give Nathan his god damn superhero movie and stop handing them to Ryan "check out my douchey abs in evey damn movie I'm in" reynolds. Yes ryan, they're every nice and we're all extremely jealous, now put your shirt on and try to act.
This is exciting and I hope GAH movie is made with Nathan in it. But I hope it's done right not just messed up just for the sake of it. Greatest American Hero was one of those shows I would make sure I saw every week when I was growing up. Just loved it. And Nathan can pull off bumbling as well as being an action man, not to mention being easy on the eyes, so I'm sure he could bring something great to the table. Again, if the film is done right. I've continued to be disappointed with remakes of shows I've loved as a kid, so I guess I'm not holding my breath it'll be spectacular, though I think it has the potential to be. Perhaps it's not far off from happening though seeing Steve Cannell was the creator GAH and has worked on Nathan's current tv show Castle.
BTW, the suit wasn't given to him by the government, it was from an alien race who found him worthy
Yaay!!! I do hope they do a movie of The Greatest American Hero - especially if Nathan Fillon is to be in it. Love him in Castle, and I think he could pull it off quite well!!
Still, if he doesn't do it, then also a spinoff of the GAH would be good where the suit was given to a female as was in the original ending episode...
But my bet is on Nathan, and my fingers are crossed for a GAH movie!!!
Why not - they have remade things like Hulk, Batman, the A-Team, Spiderman - just to name a few...
Give Nathan a go with it, I say!!
