Nic Cage Sues Ex-Business Manager for Bad Advice

I had been wondering about Nic Cage's financial woes for a while. Perhaps you've read some of this stuff about Cage needing money so he sells some houses or whatever. How is that possible, you might ask. Wasn't Cage part of the $20 million club for a while?

Well it turns out he's not just a victim of bad hair plugs; Cage on Friday sued his former business manager Samuel J. Levin for twenty million bucks claiming he was given bad advice...for seven years. According to Variety, Cage asserts in his suit that he relied on Levin's advice and that it wasn't until he hired new management that he had any inkling that he was in dire financial straits.

So says the suit:

"Instead of protecting and preserving Cage's wealth during one of the greatest economic periods in the country's history, Levin placed Cage in numerous highly speculative and risky real estate investments, resulting in Cage suffering catastrophic losses."

This stuff happens with alarming frequency. You think Celebrity A is loaded but through their own negligence, ignorance, or lack of discipline wind up broke after a few years. Sometimes, they go out on their own and make bad decisions, and other times they're just robbed in ways similar to what Cage describes in the lawsuit.

Is bad advice actionable? I'd say it could go either way in this case. It's not embezzlement per se and being bad at your job is not a crime. Obviously, part of the proof will be in whether or not Levin gave great advice to other clients and just preyed on Cage or whether he just missed across the board. I still don't think, even if the guy did hose The Wicker Man, Cage has much of an excuse for turning a blind eye to his investments for most of a decade. I mean, I've got a broker, but I still check my damn statement when it comes in.

Cage's Astro Boy opens next weekend and Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans will be out befre Thanksgiving.

Ah yes, there really is no substitute for personal accountability. Yet fools and their money are continually parted. Rather than accept his own poor choices, Cage seeks to blame someone else but then doesn't society foster that? It seems commonplace that whatever it is to befall you... if's not your fault. Bad investments made your money vanish? Who told you to invest? Ate your way into body doubling as Jabba the Hut? Who sold you that fast food? It's ridiculous but it's easier to blame others than to accept that hey... you just screwed yourself.

Personal Worst Actor List:

1. Keanu Reeves
2. Nicholas Cage
3. Kiefer Sutherland

Had to be said.

But The Wicker Man was good for a laugh. I love watching horrible actors run around and punch random people.
