Friday, October 2, 2009 at 10:32PM Second Trailer for Scorese's 'Shutter Island'
We're a couple trailers into Shutter Island, now due out in Feburary, and I'm no closer to truly understanding it. That's a good sign, I think. I could read the book (or the upcoming graphic novel we told you about earlier in the week), but I prefer not to read before I see whenever possible.

The Martin Scorsese movie was going to be in the flood of Oscar films this fall, but Paramount is directing its attention to The Lovely Bones and Up in the Air, although at the moment all the focus appears to be on Up in the Air. And it's tough to push three movies for the same awards, and that would obviously be the case in the acting, adapted screenplay, directing, and Best Picture races. So off to February we go.
There could be a commercial reason here, too. February 19th is a dry season, that uncomfortable in-between that follows Valentine's Day and falls too close to the Oscars, so the studios in general take a couple weeks off from hitting new releases. Because of that and because a DiCaprio/Scorsese movie won't need as much push when other "serious" films are in theaters, there's a chance this could do better in February than if it had come out this weekend, the original release date.
Incidentally: The second trailer is better. So to paraphrase Randy Savage, snap into a psychological thriller!

I'm just going to throw it out there: The Ssshhhh inmate in this trailer, the old woman losing her hair, looks like the scariest Amy Poehler character ever.

I am ecstatic about this release. Whether this weekend or next February, it will get my full attention. Scorsese and Dicaprio have proven to be a dream team, and this looks like cinematic gold, no, scratch that, platinum.
Would you call it a psychological thriller though? It looks more like a horror film to me, which is what intrigues me the most, a Scorsese horror!
Oh god! I'm all giddy!!!
Well, based on my understanding of the trailer - which could be different than yours - it looks like Leo's got a lot of shit going on in his mind. I could be wrong, though, but that's why I went with psychological thriller.
I am sorry but the first trailer was MUCH better
Based on both trailers, I would assume that Leo is the "missing person", or number 69, or whatever number it was.
Watch again with this in mind...
The trailers would seem to imply that Leo is the missing patient, but that would be waaaaaay too simple and hackneyed, right? If that turns out to be the case, and it is conceived as a "twist" or a "big reveal" that can be figured out by watching the trailer, then this movie will be a failure on a number of levels.
You could reference The Silence of the Lambs to make a case that this still has a chance at next year's Oscars, but the media has changed so much in 18 years it is hard to imagine any February movies doing that again anytime soon.
This is probably a smart move financially, though. As long as it is critically and commercially successful, there's no reason to not release a major film by a major filmmaker in February. Unless... there is something wrong with the film (see paragraph 1). Let's hope that's not the case.
It's definitely a psychological thriller. Having read the book I'm really excited about seeing how they lay everything out on sceen.
MRPigg, and some of you other folks, are aware this film is based off the BOOK correct? So anybody who has read the book would not be expecting some "twist" or "big reveal".
