David Duchovny Wants 'X-Files' Movie For 2012

David Duchovny still wants a third X-Files movie, having achieved peace with the impact his character of Fox Mulder had on his life and career. You'll remember, Duchovny wanted to stop shooting the show in Vancouver in favor of Los Angeles, and he and Gillian Anderson both kind of walked away from the series (and the first film) not looking back.

But the cast and creator Chris Carter reunited to make X-Files: I Want to Believe, which was a bit of a letdown, even though it had a modest budget allowing the film to become profitable. So a third movie, now that everyone is re-invested in the lore of the original series, seems inevitable.

“As far as the X-Files movie I’d like to do next, if we get a chance to do it, would be a return to the heart and soul of the mythology, which is the alien-oriented conspiracy," Duchovny tells The Daily Beast.

That is, of course, exactly what they should be doing, and it's really the only way to generate any interest in a third movie so far down the line. And just how far down the line are we talking?

"I think it’s natural for The X-Files to have another movie in 2012, so we’ll see if we get to do it,” adding that he feels last year's sequel was unjustly excoriated.“I was happy with it… I have nothing but respect for Chris Carter and the writing staff.”

You have to wonder if the success he's found with Californication will help Fox take another chance on The X-Files, although as I mentioned, it wasn't a big commercial disappointment in 2008. But while Duchovny sees 2012 as a natural fit, the real tie-in would be September 2013, the 20th anniversary of the premiere of the series.

I am in also. I think they should go back to to core mythology. I liked the last movie but it was more like an episode of Millenium then X-files.

I love The X-Files, but I think it is time to move on. It would have to be something totally fresh and exciting, like Abrams' Star Trek, to get me excited again.

How about a movie with Hank Moody teaming up with Dana Scully?
... now THAT would be interesting...

The last movie was sooo bad. I hope this one is good. I hope they actually reboot the series or something. And why not?

A third movie would be great. Must be released on 22 Dec 2012 when the aliens supposedly take over the world.
