Tuesday, October 20, 2009 at 9:59AM Slight Improvement in the New 'Sherlock' Trailer
My hope is that Sherlock Holmes isn't as campy as it seems. The new international trailer is a little darker, especially at the beginning, even though we've seen a ton of the footage before. Now, my stance on this movie is pretty well-established: Why take one of the world's most beloved characters in a completely different direction when the source material is rich enough and the cast is good enough that you have no reason to?

The action-packed Holmes is fine, but anything close to vaudeville will probably send me up a wall. Still, because the latest trailer seems to position those comedic moments as perhaps isolated instances rather than being the consistent undercurrent of the film, maybe there's more here than I have given it credit for to this point.
There is a great deal to like going in - Downey, Law, Mark Strong, Rachel McAdams (who still looks great) - but if I had my druthers, I'd prefer a Holmes movie that played to their strengths as actors instead of one that might shake up the characters just to shake up the characters. We'll see how it plays out. In the meantime, here's the latest Holmes trailer:

Robert Downey Jr. has come a long way since Weird Science, thats for sure. I have to say I'm beyond excited for this movie.
This trailer was cut a hell of a lot better than the last was, thats for sure. Looks great =)
it will be great...period.
Or it could not be. Wouldn't be the first time a movie failed to live up to expectations.
I've heard good things from a friend of mine who recently attended a screening, which involved Guy Richie here in the valley.
Obivious it still a rough cut of the film, from what he said they did not show Moriarty's face at all. (he knew nothing about the Brad Pitt rumors)
I heard about that screening. I actually got word from someone that the film is pretty fun. But like I said, if they're only selling some of the campy elements in trailers and it pops up sporadically in a more serious film, I think that could work.
