Surprise: Wes Craven Will Direct 'Scream 4'
Tuesday, October 20, 2009 at 12:43PM
This is one of the most obvious announcements we've been waiting to hear: Wes Craven will return to direct Scream 4. He's always been attached as a producer, and with Kevin williamson writing the script and Clan Arquette returning, it would just seem backward if Craven hired someone else to direct, especially when he can double his payday going behind the camera.

That's exactly what he'll do, according to Cinema Blend, which says that Craven has all the time in the world now that he's completed his new thriller 25/8. That means the 70-year-old isn't limited to just producing at this point, though I doubt he ever really was. Odds are, he just didn't want to commit until all the pieces lined up.
Curiously, Cinema Blend says Neve Campbell will probably have a reduced role, and I think based on the history of the franchise, we know exactly how this will play out. Campbell didn't want to return at first but now is in the movie, so the compromise is probably a tacked-on opening sequence in which she finally gets murdered. If they go another way, I'd be really surprised.
There's still no exact timetable here, but the chances are it will be released in 2011. I suppose late 2010 is an option - and IMDB has it as a 2010 production, though that doesn't factor in release dates, necessarily - but I would think some of this has to wait and see where The Weinstein Company is after the awards season.
