Neill Blomkamp Lines Up Next Sci-Fi Flick

Before we get to a District 9 sequel, director Neill Blomkamp will explore another bit of sci-fi, partnering with Media Rights Capital on a project he hopes to launch mid-2010. "MRC is letting me make the film I want to make, and that is by far the most important thing here," Blomkamp told Variety. "The film will hopefully be commercial, but it is very much a singular film, (one) that comes directly from me."

What he means by that, with no disrespect, is he gets to make the decisions this time. "District 9 was a bit different. I was learning the process then, under Peter Jackson’s wing. He had control, but was awesome enough to let me make the film I wanted to. [Bill Block is] producing this with MRC, so the difference is Pete’s involvement."

Though Blomkamp admits he has no interest in huge budget spectacles, it is believed has has more at his disposal than the $30 million he turned into nearly a quarter-billion in global ticket sales. Certainly, he's earned the opportunity to make a more expensive movie, it's great to hear that he doesn't want to be Michael Bay.

There's also a few good quotes from MRC CEO Modi Wiczyk about the company's business model, if you're interested in that kind of thing. The point of it all is that more often than not, its films are profitable. Blomkamp now has some name recognition to go along with the financial success, which should give the company and whatever this closely guarded film idea is a decent cushion once it hits theaters.
