Ricky Gervais To Host The Golden Globes
Monday, October 26, 2009 at 1:00PM
It could be great fun for us, because we're not in the room, but industry types will probably do a little Monday morning quarterbacking after Ricky Gervais hosts The Golden Globes. The announcement came today from The Hollywood Foreign Press, choosing Gervais as its first host since 1995.

"Not only is this the biggest Hollywood celebration of the industry which includes both film and TV, but also an environment where I feel I can get free reign as a host," Gervais said in a statement. "I have resisted many other offers like this, but there are some things you just don't turn down."
Cynically, you can look at the actor-writer-director-producer's history with NBC/Universal as a reason the NBC special event sought him out. In addition to The Office, which he created and executive produces - a task he said on the Emmys consisted of nothing more than opening the mailbox and grabbing the check - Gervais' recent The Invention of Lying gets its international distribution through Universal.
Primarily, though, he's getting this job because everyone acknowledges his biting sense of humor, which works as well off-the-cuff as it does in a script, and he has been a great addition to previous awards shows as a presenter. But there's little doubt that at some point he'll tell a joke that someone thinks crosses the line. Afterward, we'll have all that hand-wringing about whether or not he was the right choice. I contend you know what you're getting, so it would do little good to complain about it after the fact.
The Globes will air January 17th, and now I expect it to be more like a roast than an awards show. Frankly, that's exactly the attitude the Globes needs.

Well he was my pick to host the oscars but this is probably a better fit since he's more part of the TV world than film. It'll be great to see him and Carell go at each other like they always do...
I like the idea that Jackman hosts the Oscars...but what does everyone think about the possibility of having Timberlake doing it in the future? Anybody?
Brilliant!
