Woody Allen Meets a 'Tall, Dark Stranger'

We never know much about Woody Allen films before they're released. Generally, we'll get familiar with the cast, and they're almost always a solid collection of actors, but the story is kept under wraps. Sometimes, that's for the best, especially in the last decade, Allen's most hit-or-miss era.

And now, replacing Untitled Woody Allen Project as the name of his latest is You Will Meet a Tall, Dark Stranger. The Hollywood Reporter knows a few more details, too, which is quite rare so far in advance of Woody's work: "The film...revolves around different members of a family, their tangled love lives and their attempts to try to solve their problems." OK, granted, that's not very detailed, but it's a start.

Allen's ensemble, which we'll present in alphabetical order the way he does, include Antonio Banderas, Josh Brolin, Anthony Hopkins, Gemma Jones, Freida Pinto, Lucy Punch, and Naomi Watts. Like most of Allen's recent output, the movie shot in Europe, London to be precise. And following the clues, I'd say Banderas is the tall, dark stranger of the title.

He has done better overseas, however, if he's a superstitious type. The only movie that really fell flat of his European efforts was Scoop. But all the others - Match Point, Cassandra's Dream, and Vicky Cristina Barcelona - are all quite good.

Agreed. Woody Allen's Match Point is by far his greatest work. This film is set to be released in 2010 sometime, hopefully in the spring. Should be great. His films always are.

Match Point is certainly NOT Woody's greatest work. Though the film is great, his best work would have to be the flawless Annie Hall. After that you have Hannah and Her Sisters, then Manhattan, then... I'd rank Match Point down around 6 or 7.
