'Hellraiser' Remake Also Coming in Unnecessary 3-D

Yesterday, we told you about a new Short Circuit that Dimension Films is making. Dimension is doing the drive-thru window thing these days by propping up revisions of Hellraiser, An American Werewolf in London, Scanners, and Piranha, as well as the Halloween flicks and Scream 4. That's not all the studio is cooking up, but it's a major thrust for Weinstein Lite.

And here's more good news, he said facetiously, like pretty much everything else he says: The twisting-in-the-wind Hellraiser remake will be in 3-D. I know: How inventive. Bloody Disgusting has the official word, but there's no official word as to why it'll be 3-D. I love the idea of the original Hellraiser more than the movie, and because it's an idea they got wrong in the 80s, a remake is appropriate. But we don't need the gimmick of the extra Dimension dimension.
In fact, the studio is pushing most of these horror movies in 3-D, but I have a feeling it's anticipating a trend that audiences don't give a damn about. Horror audiences might be more inclined to pay the extra cash for 3-D, though, and Pixar parents have no choice. Outside of those two genres, I can't see 3-D making a huge dent in most moviegoers' lives.
It's interesting that Dimension is pushing Hellraiser - now called Clive Barker's Hellraiser - down this road. I can't think of a movie of its kind that has been through so much turmoil. Several directors have come and gone and Barker claims ignorance over anyhthing the studio is planning for the remake. If some of those issues aren't handled appropriately, 3-D won't make a bit of difference.

I agree with you that the concept behind this film was better than the execution and I would have liked for them to have taken Barker's original script and try to do it justice w/ the effects work available nowadays.
3-D is a gimmick, though, and it's one put to good use in "fun" movies (whether they're horror or not) where you find reasons to throw things at the screen. I feel like adding 3-D to this means they're going to try and turn this into a slasher film, which was never the point of the Hellraiser films.
