'Spore' Video Game Movie Being Developed at Fox
Saturday, October 3, 2009 at 3:03PM
20th Century Fox and EA are teaming up to make a movie adaptation of Spore. Gamasutra reports that this is the sixth EA movie spin-off in about a year, and this one will be directed by Chris Wedge (Ice Age), who said of the adaptation, "From every perspective -- visually, thematically and comedically -- the world of Spore provides the potential to put something truly original on the screen."

This is exactly what game creator Will Wright hoped would happen last year when he talked about future plans for the tiel. "We're basically planting the seeds to spread Spore out to a much wider group of people than would ever play a computer game."
What I like about that quote is that it addresses the fundamental problem (so far) with video game movies. Very few of them are really developed as movies first and are instead games turned into movies. No matter what you're adapting, it doesn't work that way. Even though we might think something like Grand Theft Auto or Halo is a property everyone is familiar with, that's not true, even though there is a lot of crossover between gamers and target demos for a lot of movies.
So if they look at the story of Spore and highlight those cinematic elements rather that go the Doom route and bake in the first-person-shooter perspective (which means nothing in a movie), then theres's a better chance for success. I'm not saying it will play out that way here, but at least they're approaching it the right way.
Now the only question is if the story is good enough to turn into a movie in the first place or if this is just being viewed as another way to cash in.

u cant go wrong with the Ice Age director...hillarious!!!
Thats like making a movie out of the Sim City game, I don't know how thats going to work. There are more elements than the sim city game has or at least from what I read about the reviews. Still not sure if there is enough for a decent story.
This is how the game timeline goes. You create the beginnings of life, you shape your organism as it evolves, create its culture and cities on its planet and so on and then they explore space.
