Joe Wright Not Directing 'My Fair Lady'
Friday, October 30, 2009 at 3:33PM
Well, here's a spanner in the works: Joe Wright directly contradicts reports from this past weekend that he'll be directing My Fair Lady. For the better part of two years, Keira Knightley has been the odds-on choice to update Eliza Doolittle, and we wrote that she had beaten out Scarlett Johansson for the role just a few days ago. As part of that announcement, Wright's name was dropped as the new director. But not according to him.

You can see in the video below (from Screenrush) that Wright isn't making the movie, plain and simple. It's a natural connection, though, because his first two films - Pride and Prejudice and Atonement - both starred Knightley. Plus, after the disappointing returns of The Soloist, Wright might have been reaching for a sure thing.
No such luck, though:
At one point, Oscar winner Danny Boyle was rumored for this project, but not by Danny Boyle, who never gave any indication he'd make this or the next Bond film. Emma Thompson has written the script - we know that much - so if the Knightley news is true (and it hasn't been refuted...yet), those two factors should be enough to attract a pool of directors. But Wright was asked and he passed. Fair enough.

Awww mannn, I love Joe Wrights work, I mean anyone who knows jack about great filmaking does....so Iam a bit surprised he's passed, I mean it certainly would be stretching him as a director too
I actually liked The Soloist, it could have been a lot more but heyy it was a good film, it did kinda fail in the box office but it wasn't marketed properly in my opinion..
Dunno who can do this project, I mean it is pretty ambitious, I mean this film is a classic and if done "wrong" people will be just pissed off and it could damage careers...
Headline should have read "Wright the Wrong Man For the Job".
Emma Thompson might do a good job directing her own script.
