The Sequel Nobody Wanted to See is Being Made
Tuesday, October 6, 2009 at 6:09AM
One of the more surreal moments of my adult life was walking toward the theater the
night Showgirls was released and seeing a guy scalping tickets to the movie. I'm sure in geek
circles, that stuff has happened when people are on line waiting for days on end, but for Showgirls?
It didn't even make money that weekend.

That apparently doesn't matter to filmmaker Marc Vorlander, who according to the German site Extra Tipp
(via Jo Blo and a Google translator), is prepping a sequel to the Joe Eszterhas' most Eszterhas-y moment.
The title is Showgirls: Story of Hope, which ranks quite high on the unintentional comedy scalre, or
on the intentional one, come to think of it.
I don't remember the character played by Rena Riffel in Showgirls, but the sequel would apparently
revolve around her character. The Google translator says her character dies "from a dose of contaminated
cocaine," and then her brother travels from America to Frankfurt to find out who's responsible...for
tainting her drugs.
Man, that sounds like a great pitch for a movie, doesn't it? Contaminated street drugs, revenge, and
a sequel to one of the biggest punchlines in movie history. What's not to love?

I think this is one of the worst ideas ever, but apparently for different reasons than you do. If you don't view Showgirls as one of the great achievements in tongue-in-cheek moviemaking, you're missing out, in my opinion.
If the sequel involves Rene Riffel's character (Penny), I have to wonder if it'll also involve a return of Glenn Plummer's character James; last we heard in Showgirls, he'd knocked her up and they were intending to get married. There couldn't be a sequel without some more of those edgy dance numbers, could there?
Actually, come to think of it, maybe "brother" is a mistranslation for "husband." (Or maybe it's a racial thing... her "brother" comes to get her.) I don't know if either would make sense from a German-to-English standpoint or not, though.
Eszterhas and Verhoeven developed a sequel immediately after Showgirls, it's called Bimbos. But this new one doesn't sound too hot.
I am glad there will at least be some man-meat in this movie. I hope they cast that little stud from the Twilight movies to be the brother... yummo yummo.
Oh and not to plug away but the Colin Boyd special has been extended(oh my!) for another year at my salon.
$100.00 and you get the works and leave very happy.. YUMMO !!!
