Eddie Murphy Out, Marlon Wayans In As Richard Pryor

If they could make a great (but admittedly mostly fictional) movie about Mozart, as Milos Forman did with the brilliant Amadeus, then I guess they can make a movie about another one- of-a-kind performer like Richard Pryor. That's the plan, and somehow it involves Marlon Wayans.

Now, Pryor, if you're younger than, say, 30, is just about everything you need to know about contemporary stand-up comedy. He's kind of the Beatles of that art form, incorporating everything that came before him, turning it into something completely new, and inspiring everything that came after him as well as his contemporaries. So his life story is certainly worthy fodder for a bio-pic, so I have no problem with that.

Bill Condon, who directed Dreamgirls, has a script, which previously had Eddie Murphy attached as his mentor. The screenplay wound up at Sony and Happy Madison, but Murphy did not. Why? Probably because Paramount was originally going to produce the film and Murphy has delivered two huge losers for that studio in the past 18 months.

Entertainment Weekly, which has broken the most recent update on this story, says only that Murphy and Paramount had "conflicts," but let's be honest about it: He made $20 million or more for Meet Dave and Imagine That, which is a little less than both movies made combined in the US.

So Murphy moved on, leaving the film without its central figure. Entertainment Weekly says Wayans is in "advanced discussions" to play Pryor, and based solely on his work in Darren Aronofsky's Requiem for a Dream, he might be able to pull it off. Producers were apparently impressed enough by a transformative screen test to stop their search, so we'll see.

Jamie Foxx managed to do Ray Charles without it becoming an impression, and Frank Langella certainly embodied a type of Richard Nixon we knew, so there's room for Wayans to create a living, breathing character without coming up short as the great comedian.

Nice closing paragraph Colin, it ALMOST changed my mind ....BUT

This is such a bad idea!

Marlon should not and can not do this! This is ridiculous, Eddie Murphy though he's delivered duds recently can do this role and BE THIS ROLE, Im really dissapointed because while I hate to admit it b/c of his recent failures at the box office, I'am an Eddie Murphy fan....he's very talented and his history more than the near present has shown that...

The studio shouldnt be f*ing blaming him b/c of the failures, I mean come on, they must have known those films would not make anything, they were horribly written and any wannabe actor couldve played those roles...,

But this Pryor project not anyone can play, and I feel like Eddie is one of the very few WHO CAN!

He did great in Dreamgirls didnt he get a nomination or did he win? He also knows the director, so this makes sense damnit, so I dunno what to think, there must of been a HUGE disagreement over the portrayal, the script, direction, or the bullshit excuse of not enough money (most likely the reason but I dunno)...

Marlon Wayans while he did excellent in Requiem which is a film that really really disturbed me, shouldnt be doing this, this is way too over his head...

My opinion, its all Im saying.,..

Murphy got a nomination, and when he didn't win, he became the first losing acting nominee to immediately leave the Academy Awards. Talent or not (and I believe that's a sliding scale for all performers), he's an asshole. As for his ability, I wouldn't let Eddie Murphy perform on my outgoing voicemail at this point.

I'd say Chiwetel Ojiofor here, but I nominate him for just about everything.

Wow, I never heard of that little story until now...

So Ive read up some things and according to his people and many others, he was planning to leave right after the award was given out regardless of winning or not...but considering the circumstances that is pretty sleazy...

But Colin you gotta admit, he got robbed, Alan Arkin's performance was good but the film Little Miss Sunshine was far better as a whole film, I mean Arkin's career is long and illustrious and has done far better work in my opinion than that role, but nothing compared to Eddie Murphy's James Brown....

Reasons
1) James Brown died just mere months before the awards so Eddie, I thought Eddie would have gotten some tribute votes to help him out
2) He did win the Golden Globe, gotta throw that out there...
3) Eddie has not won really major hardware in his entire career, been nominated yes but win no, I mean the guy has been around for decades just as Arkin...

I feel like it was a major upset and an instance where someone honestly got robbed like they stole something...lol

No, I won't admit he got robbed. Let's remember that Jackie Earle Haley was in that category for Little Children and Michael Sheen (The Queen), James McAvoy (The Last King of Scotland), Jack Nicholson (The Departed), and Brad Pitt (Babel) weren't even nominated for the Oscar.

Secondly, he hasn't been around nearly as long as Arkin, nor does his body of work as an actor stack up.

Thirdly, Dreamgirls isn't that good. Outside of Jennifer Hudson, there's nothing truly memorable about it. I honestly felt that Murphy's performance was overvalued because it was supposed to be his big dramatic coming out party. It was fine, but not better than the other nominees nor many performances that weren't even nominated.

Wow didn't look at it that way or I mean I completely didn't realize that, but yes if anything Jackie Earle Haley really should have taken it....his"star" or the momentum or the studio heads to make a campaign for hardware I guess didnt succeed or happen in that case..

Im still somewhat surprised why some of whom you mentioned weren't nominated but hey whatever...

But hey ya made your point and I guess Im teeter tottering your way lol
- but i still stand firm it was was a better performance than just fine..
