Sam Raimi Hopes to Shoot 'Spidey 4' Next March

With summer 2011 not getting any further away, Sam Raimi had better start putting one foot in front of the other, since his Spider-Man 4 will launch that blockbuster season. As MTV points out, that date was set in stone over two years ahead of time, which is not a trend I particularly like, because it forces protocol before process. But that's a story for another time.

Raimi now tells the network that he's hoping to start filming Spidey 4 in March, whic hastens the work screenwriter Gary Ross is doing. "He's working on a draft," Raimi insists. "I just gave him some notes and he's doing a rewrite right now."

These things are seldom perfect, and when you're on who knows how many drafts but your third official writer in a year, that's not the best sign in the world. But we'll remain hopeful that Ross can pull it out of the fire.

Of course, with Raimi getting commitments from Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst, there's something he doesn't have to worry about moving forward, and he's keeping some of that symmetry behind the scenes as well.

"I've got a production designer who is starting to design the sets and the environments that the picture will take place in, Raimi said, without acknowledging the villain (again). "We just brought aboard Scott Stokdyk as one of the two visual effects supervisors, and I worked with him on all three Spider-Man pictures."

The fourth time through, Raimi and company should have a handle on what they're doing. But if you saw Spidey 3, you know that kind of effort won't cut it again.
