This Week in Trailers: 'Invictus,' 'Avatar,' 'The Road'

Even though there weren't that many trailers this week, they were all some pretty heavy hitters. At least at some point, all of them were in the conversation for Best Picture nominations this year. Of course, some of them aren't in that mix now; Shutter Island from Marty Scorsese and Paul Greengrass' Green Zone have been bounced to 2010. John Hillcoat's The Road just doesn't have that momentum anymore, leaving Invictus and Avatar the only real options for that award among these high profile trailers.

As for the trailers themselves, I appear to be standing alone in my lack of enthusiasm for the second version for The Road, while I think some of our readers have misinterpreted what I've said about Avatar. I don't think the movie looks bad, or that the trailer's not any good, just that we've seen more of the CGI aliens now, and I'm not convinced they're worth the trouble.
