'Transformers' Tops 2009 Video Charts in One Week

Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen is already the year's biggest box office hit if you look at raw box office numbers, and now it has set another mark. Home Media Magazine says that in one week's time, the Revenge of the Fallen DVD and Blu-ray has become the top-selling home entertainment release of 2009.

On the first day it was available, October 20th, the Transformers sequel sold two million copies. That's a lot. In the first week, the number jumped to 6.3 million on DVD and 1.2 million Blu-ray. Pretty good ratio for the Blu-ray, I'm thinking. Last year, total Blu-ray sales were only eight million units, so in a week, this movie did about 15% of that figure.
There's probably another slight sales peak on the way with the holiday shopping season, but I think the fact that this knocked Snow White from the top rung of the Blu-ray charts says something about the lingering poor health of home video in general, although there's no denying the impact Transformers has had on the marketplace.
However, industry analyst Tom Adams says that this is a positive indicator for the industry. “It’s certainly an encouraging sign for the business,” adding that the Blu-ray numbers are the nicest surprise “because if the business is going to turn around, it’s going to be because Blu-ray starts performing, and this is certainly an indicator that Blu-ray is starting to play its role and help stabilize the business.”
