No 'Monsters, Inc.' Sequel for Director Pete Docter

Back in April, I sat down with Pete Docter, the director of Up, and asked him about the rumored sequel to Monsters, Inc. He was not very forthcoming then. "Basically, the way we approach all the films at Pixar is if we feel like we come upon a story worth telling, we'll do it. If we don't, we won't. So, we're still looking."

With Up on DVD and Blu-ray today, Docter was brought into the Monsters, Inc. discussion again, this time by New York Magazine. He's more definitive now: "I'm not working on...I'm working on something else, but I cannot announce what it is." A vow of secrecy is common at Pixar, so while we don't know what Docter's next project will be, it isn't a Mike and Sully sequel.

"We finished Up, I took some time off, spent some time in Europe and Japan doing publicity over there, so I've only been on this for like a couple weeks," Docter said of his new project, adding "it generally takes at least four years, if not five," to make a Pixar movie, meaning we won't see it for quite a while.

Between now at 2014, though, Pixar has Toy Story 3, John Carter from Mars, and though it's technically not a "Pixar" film, the company is helping director Brad Bird's live-action 1906, the story of the San Francisco earthquake. There's also supposedly a Cars 2 off in the distance as well...so that would put us close to where we'd need to be before Docter has his next film ready.

However, that doesn't mean Pixar is abandoning Monsters, Inc. 2, nor does Docter come close to saying as much. All he says is he's not working on it. So it could still be happening in the back rooms at Pixar somewhere.

Ugh, they should definitely make a Monsters, Inc. 2 before a Cars 2. Cars was just not that good...
