Winona, Fox Searchlight Join Aronofsky's 'Black Swan'

A few more names have been added to Darren Aronofsky's Black Swan, the movie that is becoming more heavily circulated because of a sex scene with Natalie Portman and Mila Kunis than its subject matter...which is not that. I forget what it is exactly...Oh wait, yeah, it's about ballerinas and the supernatural.

Winona Ryder, kind of a Portman version 1.0, has joined the cast, and she'll play, shall we say, a much more "seasoned" dancer for Aronofsky. It's hard to say exactly what went wrong with Ryder's career. I'm not convinced she was ever as talented as we all wanted her to be - we just had a real dearth of teenage talent in the 1980s, let's be honest - but the pendulum really swung the other way in the years before her shoplifting conviction and it was a long time after that before people took her seriously again. I give her credit for slowly rebuilding her reputation, though. This should help.
There's more news on the Black Swan front: Barbara Hershey and Vincent Cassel have also reportedly been added to the ensemble, and a distribution/production deal has been reached with Fox Searchlight to handle Aronofsky's film. And while it was slated to be an early 2010 production, the word is now that it will start filming before the end of this year.
My hunch is that Searchlight has very specific goals for it in the festival season and up through the 2011 Oscars, so the earlier it gets into production, the earlier it can start its run for the roses.
Black Swan has already drawn some comparisons to The Others, only with ballet and hot chicks gettin' it on.

I've always thought of her as a female Keanu Reeves. Like Keanu, She's good in certain roles...but not very versatile. No matter how hard he tries...Keanu has "surfer dude" voice...and delivers everything that way. No matter how hard she tires....Winona has "surfer chick" voice....and delivers everything that way. IMO....she's not horrible...but was overrated.
